What is something you love about your job?

I love getting to be there with kids when they are having a tough moment. I’ve been there when kids are grappling with a cancer diagnosis or feeling sad and scared from a needle poke. Art has the magical ability to distract from pain and worry. I love to be able to share this magical tool, and it often transforms the moment.

Arts For Life Staff, Arts For Life Staff Spotlight: Meet Cara!, Arts For Life AnywhereWhat is your favorite kind of art to make?

I love making pottery on the wheel. I love the feel of clay and I love centering it on the wheel. I enjoy improving my skills so that I can form clay into functional objects that are also beautiful to use.

Name one or two artists who inspire you.

Arts For Life Staff, Arts For Life Staff Spotlight: Meet Cara!, Arts For Life Anywhere Arts For Life Staff, Arts For Life Staff Spotlight: Meet Cara!, Arts For Life AnywhereI am inspired by the ceramic artist Sarah Wells Rolland. Not only is Sarah an incredible artist who is able to make large lightweight vessels that sing with beauty and movement, but she is also a warm and generous entrepreneur, teacher, mentor, and friend.  She is the owner of The Village Potters In Asheville, NC.

You can see more of Sarah’s work on Facebook and Instagram

What is your favorite internet art resource ?

Arts For Life Staff, Arts For Life Staff Spotlight: Meet Cara!, Arts For Life AnywhereA 4 year old patient at Arts for Life told me about the Joy Doodle app, and it has been my favorite ever since. There are lots of fun neon drawing effects.

Breathe + is a stress relief app with ocean waves to watch as you calm down and breathe deeply.

I also like the easy & fun kids art activities on the artful parent

What is your favorite art supply?

Arts For Life Staff, Arts For Life Staff Spotlight: Meet Cara!, Arts For Life AnywhereClay! But in the absence of a ceramics studio, I like liquid watercolors! They have wonderfully bright colors (I am a big fan of rainbow colors). They are fun and easy to use, and the cleanup is easy (which is a big plus as an art teacher).

If there was a world free from illness and disabilities, where Arts For Life didn’t need to exist,  what kind of job would you have?

Arts For Life Staff, Arts For Life Staff Spotlight: Meet Cara!, Arts For Life AnywhereI would continue to run my own business, Cara Mae Skin Care, where I make and sell Potters’ Skin Butter lotion. I would also become a ceramic artist in a big shared studio with my friends.

What are two things you’re grateful for right now?

I’m grateful to live near the woods where I can go hiking with my partner, Michelle.

I am also grateful for my community, family, friends, and colleagues.
